The Secret to Mastering a Real Push-Up

Trainer Tip from Fitness Magazine

Trainer and nutrition expert Harley Pasternak, a member of the Fitness advisory board, is the author of The Body Reset Diet.

Q: Will I ever be able to do real push-ups?

A: Yes, but not if you're only doing them on your knees.  Incline push-ups - with your body in plank position - are your secret weapon.  Use the plan below every other day; once you can do two to three sets of 10, graduate to the next phase.

Phase 1: Counter Push-Up
Find a waist-high surface, like a kitchen counter.  Position hands slightly wider than shoulders.  Step feet back two to three feet.  Contract abs and straighten spine.  Inhale, bend elbows and lower chest toward counter.  Exhale, straighten arms and return to start position.

Phase 2: Bench Push-Up
Find a surface that's about knee-high; do the same movement as above.

Phase 3: Knee Push-Up
Begin on hands and knees, palms flat on floor and below shoulders.  Slide knees backward as you press hips toward floor until you form a straight line.  Inhale, bend elbows and lower chest toward floor.  Exhale, straighten arms and return to start position, keeping stomach tight.

Phase 4: Full Push-Up
Go get 'em, Tiger!  Get into a plank position, with hands slightly wider than shoulders.  Lower body, keeping abs contracted, back flat and elbows tucked in close to body.  When chest nearly touches floor, pause, then exhale and push back up to start position.

The Best At-Home and Pro Tips to Rid Cellulite

"With these clever and effective ways to camouflage and combat unsightly dimples, get set for smoother skin ahead," says Melanie Rud Chadwick from Shape Magazine.

Got bumps? Take solace in the fact that you're not alone. A whooping 90% of us have cellulite, a genetic condition that affects women of all shapes and sizes, says LA-based dermatologist Howard Murad, M.D., author if The Cellulite Solution. While there's no permanent fix for cellulite, there are ways to improve it. Here, the best at-home and pro tips to rock a smoother rear view in a day, a week, or a month.

If you have...

A day

PRO TIP Opt for fillers. "Injectables that add volume to the face, like Radiesse, also works wonders for cellulite," says NYC derm Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D. "They fill in the puckers and make skin look more uniform." The procedure can be done in minutes, and you'll walk away with instant results that last up to a year.

HOME TRICK When you have less than 24 hours to get bikini-ready, hit the bottle - of body bronzer of self-tanner.  Dimpled areas are create shadows that are more noticeable on lighter skin, so darkening your tone will mask these shadowy spots and make you look smoother, says Victoria's Secret makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez.

PRO TIP Consider endermologie, a noninvasive treatment that employs a machine to knead and suction dimpled areas. This breaks up fat pockets and stimulates lymphatic drainage.

HOME TRICK Give yourself regular rubdowns. "A firm massage will help separate clumps of fat cells so they lie more smoothly underneath the skin," says Bank. Apply a cellulite cream to trouble spots and massage vigorously. Just keep in mind that the benefits will be subtle - expect around a 10% improvement. Or, save yourself the elbow grease and try the Bliss FatGirlSlim Lean Machine, an electronic massager that also employs vacuum action to further boost circulation.

A week
PRO TIP Try Thermage. The noninvasive procedure uses radio frequency to stimulate collagen and tighten skin, which starts to looks firmer after about 4 weeks, says Frank.

HOME TRICK Take a holistic approach. First, start dry brushing daily. "The practice smooths skin by sloughing off dead cells and boosting circulation," says Murad. Use a firm-bristle brush like the Earth Therapeutics Bumpy Bristle Massage Brush on dry skin, moving from your knees to your waist to stimulate proper lymphatic drainage. Next, think about tweaking your diet and workout. The less water you retain, the less puffy cellulite will appear, so avoid bloat-inducers like alcohol and salt. At the gym, focus on reducing overall body fat by amping up cardio to burn excess calories. Though even thin woman can have cellulite, Bank says losing weight allows the fat cells to shrink slightly, which may minimize the orange-peel effect.

Which Method of Lipo Is Right For You?

There are several different techniques for achieving virtually the same results - despite all of the marketing claims.  So what do you need to know before choosing which option is best for you?  The following describes three major methods that every prospective patient should be away of before moving forward with liposuction.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

This method was originally considered an advancement in liposuction methods in the 1990's.  Vaser is one of the main manufacturers in this realm of UAL devices.  UAL uses cannulas which send ultrasound energy through the fatty tissues, thereby liquefying that fat tissue.  Most providers now agree that this method carries an increased risk of skin and tissue burns, permanent tissue damage, scarring, nerve damage, and localized fluid accumulation called seromas.  There is insufficient proof of the safety of UAL devices therefore the FDA has never approved the marketing and advertising of UAL devices to be specifically used for liposuction.

Power Assisted Liposuction

Power Assisted Liposuction or PAL is a form of liposuction that uses vibrating straw-like cannulas of varying sizes, to break up and remove fat cells.  This method allows the practitioner to use less force while suctioning out fatty deposits compared to manual liposuction.  The use of less physical force during the procedure is not only a more efficient way for the provider to remove fat, but may also lessen the amount of swelling to the tissues and minimize the degree of trauma to the incisions.

Laser Liposuction

Most advertising would suggest that laser manufacturers such as SmartLipo and its competitors have completely reinvented liposuction.  However, in reality all of the basic steps involved with traditional liposuction are usually performed with laser liposuction including the frequent sedation of the patients, the injection of tumescent fluid (numbing solution), as well as the suction of fat. With laser lipolysis there is always an additional step with involves burning of fat just before removal.  Initially, the laser was intended to be used without liposuction of fat.  'Melted' fat was to be resorbed by the body.  This has generally been shown to be ineffective.  Most liposuctionists now agree that fat must be removed after the burning.  Ironically, this is achieved in the EXACT same manner as would be performed without the laser.

Some known disadvantages of the laser are that the fat makes this a more invasive procedure.  Burning can lead to complications and permanent injuries to the skin and surrounding tissues.  This procedure can sometimes be more expensive and is frequently used by non-experts.

SmartLipo was the first laser FDA approved for this procedure, many other "fat melting" lasers are now on the market and many others are being developed. Other lasers include CoolLipo and LipoLite.  Proponents of laser assisted liposuction claim that lasers have the ability to emulsify fat and tighten skin. Reportedly, skin tightening occurs due to laser energy which breaks collagen bonds i the dermis stimulation new collagen to form.  This process is called neocollagenesis.

No certain brand of lipolysis laser at this point has been proven to be superior to any other.  In our opinion, it is actually the skill of the provider in proper tumescent liposuction technique that is the best predictor of outcome.
