Marine Makes Tape After Lipo

Rod Davis, PA-C and Director of Surgery at Pacific Lipo, preps a Marine for the liposculpture (lipo) procedure.  This Marine has a tape test that he needs to pass later in the week and has been unable to lose the weight with diet and exercise. Which Method of Lipo Is Right For You?

There are several different techniques for achieving virtually the same results - despite all of the marketing claims.  So what do you need to know before choosing which option is best for you?  The following describes three major methods that every prospective patient should be away of before moving forward with liposuction.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

This method was originally considered an advancement in liposuction methods in the 1990's.  Vaser is one of the main manufacturers in this realm of UAL devices.  UAL uses cannulas which send ultrasound energy through the fatty tissues, thereby liquefying that fat tissue.  Most providers now agree that this method carries an increased risk of skin and tissue burns, permanent tissue damage, scarring, nerve damage, and localized fluid accumulation called seromas.  There is insufficient proof of the safety of UAL devices therefore the FDA has never approved the marketing and advertising of UAL devices to be specifically used for liposuction.

Power Assisted Liposuction

Power Assisted Liposuction or PAL is a form of liposuction that uses vibrating straw-like cannulas of varying sizes, to break up and remove fat cells.  This method allows the practitioner to use less force while suctioning out fatty deposits compared to manual liposuction.  The use of less physical force during the procedure is not only a more efficient way for the provider to remove fat, but may also lessen the amount of swelling to the tissues and minimize the degree of trauma to the incisions.

Laser Liposuction

Most advertising would suggest that laser manufacturers such as SmartLipo and its competitors have completely reinvented liposuction.  However, in reality all of the basic steps involved with traditional liposuction are usually performed with laser liposuction including the frequent sedation of the patients, the injection of tumescent fluid (numbing solution), as well as the suction of fat. With laser lipolysis there is always an additional step with involves burning of fat just before removal.  Initially, the laser was intended to be used without liposuction of fat.  'Melted' fat was to be resorbed by the body.  This has generally been shown to be ineffective.  Most liposuctionists now agree that fat must be removed after the burning.  Ironically, this is achieved in the EXACT same manner as would be performed without the laser. 

Some known disadvantages of the laser are that the fat makes this a more invasive procedure.  Burning can lead to complications and permanent injuries to the skin and surrounding tissues.  This procedure can sometimes be more expensive and is frequently used by non-experts.

SmartLipo was the first laser FDA approved for this procedure, many other "fat melting" lasers are now on the market and many others are being developed. Other lasers include CoolLipo and LipoLite.  Proponents of laser assisted liposuction claim that lasers have the ability to emulsify fat and tighten skin. Reportedly, skin tightening occurs due to laser energy which breaks collagen bonds i the dermis stimulation new collagen to form.  This process is called neocollagenesis.

No certain brand of lipolysis laser at this point has been proven to be superior to any other.  In our opinion, it is actually the skill of the provider in proper tumescent liposuction technique that is the best predictor of outcome.

Less Than Perfect Lipo Results

There are many different reasons that someone may end up with less than perfect results from a lipo procedure. He or she may have looser skin or pre-existing stretch marks which is a sign that the desired amount of post-liposuction skin tightening may not be possible. Some people may have had prior surgeries with large amounts of scarring which could significantly limit the potential for smoothness after a lipo procedure. Some patients may not have followed important aftercare instructions or follow-up regularly with office visits/phone calls as instructed. Some patients do not continue to exercise or diet afterwards to ensure optimal results. As with any procedure in any office, results may vary.

Check out Pacific Lipo's gallery of before and after photos to get a better idea of how results do vary for patients with different body types, prior surgical scars, varying degrees of skin laxity, etc. Although results may vary, one can still appreciate the significant improvement that may be achieved when the procedure is performed by an experienced liposuction specialist. That being said, patients must keep in mind that not everyone will be completely thrilled with their results, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the technique used by the liposuctionist was poor. Sometimes our bodies don’t heal as nicely as we would all hope. The goal of any lipo procedure is to help every patient look much better but unfortunately not every patient will feel better despite all reasonable efforts.

Pacific Lipo's Professional Physician’s Assistant Rodney Davis prepared for his extensive career in medicine by attending Rutgers University for his undergraduate education from 1994 through 1998. He studied in Piscataway, New Jersey, where he worked toward his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science at Rutgers University. Rodney Davis then enrolled in Touro College’s physical therapy program in Bay Shore, New York, and transferred after completing 1 year in that program into the physician’s assistant program at the same institution. He graduated in 2002.

Rodney Davis’s role as a physician’s assistant (PA) is supported by the endorsement of various officiating bodies that vigilantly regulate and certify members of numerous medical professionals in particular areas.Rodney Davis retains certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the California Academy of Physician Assistants. Licensed in both California and New York to practice medicine as a PA, Rodney Davis also possesses linguistic ability in both Spanish and English.

In addition, he is certified in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS). Currently, Rodney Davis holds the role of Director of Surgery for various lipo procedures at Pacific Liposculpture, a cosmetic surgery firm based out of San Diego, California. Prior to his work with this clinic, Rodney Davis worked with various liposuction and other cosmetic surgery establishments in both the greater Los Angeles area and San Diego.

He also possesses experience in orthopedic surgery, and from 2004 through 2007, he served as a Surgical and Clinical Assistant with Brookhaven Orthopedic Associates in East Patchogue, New York. Male Marine Ready To Weigh In After His Lipo Procedure

“I want to start off by saying thank you to Pacific Lipo. You are amazing people and have done an amazing job. Ok now I went in for my procedure 2 weeks ago today. I got my love handles and abdominal area done. I had a spare tire that no matter what I done I just could not get rid of. I am a Marine and I currently got back from deployment and all I did out there was lose weight and try and get rid of my stomach. I lost 35lbs out there weighing in at 165lbs but I still had those love handles and pooch in my stomach. Even weighing that much I was still very self conscious about my body and how I looked. To military members we want to look our very best at all times and I didn’t feel like I looked good at all. So after deployment I came home and that’s about when they started making us wear our dress uniforms on every Friday.  That was a big blow for me. Like I said before I never thought I looked good in uniform. Never over weight never on bcp just did NOT think I looked good in uniform ESP our dress uniforms. This had me to the point that I was ready to get out. I mean contract is up in few months anyways.

My wife and I set down and I told her my plan and told her that if I didn’t do something about my stomach and love handles that I was going to get out. So we started searching the web for anything that would slim me down and get rid of those areas that I was so self conscious about. I came across pacific lipo and started reading about them and noticed that they said it was minimal down time. Being I really didn’t want to take leave to have a procedure done that really caught my attention. Not only that but the fact that there was so many outstanding reviews on them. Honestly you get a lot more numb than you would ever imagine. The procedure was literally pain free. Yes there was a little discomfort but hey what do you expect you are filled with fluid and they are taking a tube and sucking the fat out of your body. Anything unnatural is going to have some discomfort. But I was fine I drove myself home and even went to work two days afterwards.

I had some worries the first weekend after the procedure I had a lot of swelling around my belly button and it kinda protruded out so I wrote Rod an email on a Sunday and explained what my concerns where. He asked for me to send him a picture. He asked my after to come in the next day. I thought something was wrong. I mean I had an appointment on Wednesday and he wanted me to come in the very next day. I come in and he looks at me and ask me a few questions. He told me to stop massaging it so much and start icing it. I did and what do you know the swelling went down.

I know it has only been 2 weeks I repeat 2 weeks and I feel like I look amazing. Rod done an excellent job. I could not be happier with the way my results are turning out. I am so ready to start working out and making my new body more defined. Rod has given me something more then a new look…Rod gave me my confidence back something that I had been lacking for a VERY long time. I will no longer ever call myself fat or let anyone else call me fat for that matter. I’ll give you an example; i had a weigh in today. i was told that i did not have to do it since i just had procedure done and I’m still swollen. I put on a smaller shirt that before I would not wear and went and weighed in. Before i would duck and dodge a weigh in if all possible and stay up the night before trying to lose weight any way i could.
