LASER LIPOSUCTION

Choosing the right technique - Is laser lipo the right choice for you?

In our increasingly beauty obsessed society, it seems like more of us are choosing to seek out cosmetic surgery to improve any flaws (whether real or perceived). Of these cosmetic procedures, one of the most popular is Laser Liposuction (also knows as Laser Lipo, Smart Lipo, Lunchtime Lipo, or Vaser Laser).

Laser Liposuction involves the use of a laser to "melt away" fatty deposits and then tightens the surrounding skin.  This technique was first discovered in Europe and has recently become FDA approved for use in the U.S.  Laser liposuction has been used for the past 10 years in South America, Europe, and Asia.  The procedure is typically done in an office setting and does not require the use of a general anesthetic.  A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin.  The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away.  The fluid released from the fat cells is removed by the body's natural waste system.  The laser also causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, thus resulting in less bleeding and bruising. 

Some liposuctionists report that one of the advantages of laser liposuction is the fact that the probability of scarring, muscle damage, or pain tends to be smaller than more traditional liposuction methods.  As a result, the patient is usually able to return to work within 48-hours.  One of the disadvantages of laser liposuction is that it may only be useful on a limited variety of body areas.  These body parts include the neck, face, and arms.  Some patients do not report a dramatic enough in their shapes or skin tightening following laser liposuction is used in other areas such as the abdomen, thighs, back areas, or the love handles.  This may be due to today's lasers not being quite aggressive enough in creating a significant change in the thickness of the fat deposits for most body types.  There is also some doubt among liposuction specialists as to exactly how effective laser liposuction is when it comes to skin tightening.  That being said, laser liposuction can be an effective procedure for a small portion of liposuction candidates.

Pricing of this procedure varies a great deal depending on how much fat you want removed, which body part is being treated, or which office you seek treatment in.  Patients who are interested in this procedure should seek treatment in a facility that specializes in liposculpture.  It is much more likely that their results will be better compared to other less experienced offices and the pricing often times is more affordable.  Pricing to selecting any method of liposuction, one should contact a liposuction specialist to find out what this procedure can do for their particular problem area.

Are You A Good Candidate For Tumescent Lipo?

Tumescent anesthesia liposuction can be of great benefit for most people who have fatty deposits in areas of their bodies that have not responded well to dieting and exercise. However, the best candidates for tumescent liposuction are active, healthy persons of average weight and good skin tone, and who have never had a lipo procedure to the same body part. Overweight individuals can also benefit from tumescent liposuction, especially if they are in the process of exercising and losing weight. The tumescent liposuction technique should be judiciously used in the morbidly obese. Ideal patients have committed to healthier habits and do not consider liposuction to be a substitute for exercising. Your liposuction specialist should listen to your goals of the treatment to better ascertain whether you have realistic expectations for what liposuction can and cannot do. It is best that liposuction patients have no significant medical problems. Age by itself is not a significant factor in tumescent liposuction.

Liposculpture under local anesthesia is the safest way to have liposuction. However, there are some people who may find it more uncomfortable than most other patients. I once performed a procedure on a patient who shared with me (after starting her procedure) that she always has difficulty when going to her dentist and requires multiple injections of the anesthetic to complete her dental procedures. Such people are commonly referred to as “lidocaine resistant” and may have a more comfortable experience if they were under general anesthesia (sleeping). However, general anesthesia is less safe and much more expensive. There were a handful of times when we stopped for a few minutes to add extra anesthetic during this person’s procedure but this is expected. She was still able to complete her procedure and even drive herself home afterwards. She scheduled another procedure in our office immediately afterwards.

Many members of our staff, including myself, have had a liposculpture procedure. Most patients anticipate that lipo will not be a completely pain-free event for every patient but neither is laser hair removal, waxing, Botox, dental procedures, etc. So like many other procedures, one should have some expectation of momentary discomfort but most patients are pleasantly surprised.

The numbing phase tends to be the only uncomfortable part but normally just last for 5-10 minutes. Anyone can view website videos of actual patients having the same procedure that this person had but they are clearly comfortable and experiencing no pain while having their problem areas reshaped. As for the incisions, we do not use stitches which allows for a couple of days of drainage (lessens swelling and bruising). Therefore, the incisions are still a little stretched immediately following the procedure. They normally heal about the size of a freckle and sometimes fade significantly but that takes some time. The incisions do shrink, bruising does fade, and the discomfort usually passes after 2-6 weeks. Liposculpture - Progression Throughout The Healing Process

Liposculpture is a minimally invasive way to permanently and immediately remove fat cells.  Although a change in shape can be seen immediately after procedure, your body will continue to improve over time.  It takes time for the body to heal and swelling to decrease after  procedure.  The before and after photos of this patient are a great example of the progression that occurs during the healing process.

Despite regular exercise and a healthy eating habits, this individual struggled to flatten her belly and trim her love handles.  She turned to liposculpture to provide a better contour to her problem areas.  She was very pleased with her results shortly after her procedure, but was told results would continue to improve over the next few months.  The patient returned for another follow up appointment 4 months after her procedure and was even more excited about her shape.  She had lost several inches from her abdomen and love handles.

There are products known to thin the blood, slowing the clotting process.  Other products are potentially harmful because of MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitory effects.  Some have the effect of lowering serum potassium levels, which can cause abnormal heart rhythms.  Some products impact the liver when general anesthesia is used.  Therefore, starting two weeks before surgery and ending two weeks after, surgery, please do not use the following:

Arnica montana (homeopathic medicine) is acceptable for postoperative bruising and swelling.  If Arnica is used, please start after surgery as it thins the blood. Melatonin (hormone) 3mg is acceptable to use as a sleep aide after surgery. Take at bedtime. 

DAY OF PROCEDURE

Eat a light breakfast and/or lunch on the day of your procedure; avoid caffeinated products such as coffee, tea, or energy drinks.  It is recommended that patients wear or bring loose and comfortable clothing the day of procedure. 

Male patients should shave hair covering the abdomen and chest prior to an abdominal lipo procedure..

FAQs - What Is The Recovery Period Like?

During your recovery from a liposculpture procedure, you will be wearing a compression garment around the areas treated.  The garment decreases swelling, helps mold the new shape, and provides support and comfort.  Garments must be worn following the procedure for comfort and to improve results. Duration of garment wear varies on an individual basis and will be determined by Rod Davis, PA-C, Pacific Lipo's Director of Surgery.  Follow up visits with Rod Davis are an important part during the recovery process and always free of charge.

Most of the bruising and swelling should subside within three weeks.  To speed the healing process and to reduce the likelihood of post-operative complications, our staff will advise you to begin light activity as soon as possible.  You should be able to return to work within one or two days if your work is fairly sedentary.  You should avoid strenuous activities for one to two weeks as your body heals, but within two to six weeks you should be able to resume all normal activities.  It's important to continue wearing the compression garment, which should be easily hidden under your clothing, unless instructed to do otherwise by our staff.

There were no surprises and Rod put me at ease with his outstanding bedside manner. It has been almost a month since my procedure and the office staff and Rod have been outstanding with guiding me through the healing process. Professional Physician’s Assistant Rodney Davis prepared for his extensive career in medicine by attending Rutgers University for his undergraduate education from 1994 through 1998. He studied in Piscataway, New Jersey, where he worked toward his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science at Rutgers University. Rodney Davis then enrolled in Touro College’s physical therapy program in Bay Shore, New York, and transferred after completing 1 year in that program into the physician’s assistant program at the same institution. He graduated in 2002.

Rodney Davis’s role as a physician’s assistant (PA) is supported by the endorsement of various officiating bodies that vigilantly regulate and certify members of numerous medical professionals in particular areas. Rodney Davis retains certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the California Academy of Physician Assistants. Licensed in both California and New York to practice medicine as a PA, Rodney Davis also possesses linguistic ability in both Spanish and English.

In addition, he is certified in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS). Currently, Rodney Davis holds the role of Director of Surgery for various lipo procedures at Pacific Liposculpture, a cosmetic surgery firm based out of San Diego, California. Prior to his work with this clinic, Rodney Davis worked with various liposuction and other cosmetic surgery establishments in both the greater Los Angeles area and San Diego.

He also possesses experience in orthopedic surgery, and from 2004 through 2007, he served as a Surgical and Clinical Assistant with Brookhaven Orthopedic Associates in East Patchogue, New York. An active supporter of The Salvation Army and the ASPCA, Rodney Davis enjoys playing racquetball or basketball as well as fishing in his spare time.
