Professional Physician Assistant (PA) Rodney Davis prepared for his extensive career in medicine by attending Rutgers University for his undergraduate education from 1994 through 1998. He studied in Piscataway, New Jersey, where he worked toward his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science at Rutgers University. Rodney Davis then enrolled at Touro College in Bay Shore, New York, and completed the Physician Assistant program. He graduated in 2002.

Rodney Davis's role as a Physician Assistant is supported by the endorsement of various officiating bodies that vigilantly regulate and/or certify members of numerous medical professions in particular areas. Rodney Davis retains certifications/licenses with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Controlled Substances, the Physician Assistant Board, and the California Academy of Physician Assistants. Rod successfully renewed his certification in 2008 with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. He has held licenses in both California and New York to practice medicine as a PA. Rod also possesses linguistic ability in Spanish.

In addition, he is certified in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).

Rodney Davis has performed all of the lipo procedures at Pacific Liposculpture, a cosmetic surgery firm based out of San Diego, California. He has performed lipo treatments on a variety of satisfied clients, including athletes, lawyers, physicians, and even a number of staff members. Prior to his work with this Pacific Lipo, Rod worked with various liposuction and other cosmetic surgery establishments in both the greater Los Angeles area (Beverly Hills) and San Diego (La Jolla/UTC).

Choosing the right technique - Is laser lipo the right choice for you?

In our increasingly beauty obsessed society, it seems like more of us are choosing to seek out cosmetic surgery to improve any flaws (whether real or perceived). Of these cosmetic procedures, one of the most popular is Laser Liposuction (also knows as Laser Lipo, Smart Lipo, Lunchtime Lipo, or Vaser Laser).

Laser Liposuction involves the use of a laser to "melt away" fatty deposits and then tightens the surrounding skin.  This technique was first discovered in Europe and has recently become FDA approved for use in the U.S.  Laser liposuction has been used for the past 10 years in South America, Europe, and Asia.  The procedure is typically done in an office setting and does not require the use of a general anesthetic.  A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin.  The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away.  The fluid released from the fat cells is removed by the body's natural waste system.  The laser also causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, thus resulting in less bleeding and bruising. 

Some liposuctionists report that one of the advantages of laser liposuction is the fact that the probability of scarring, muscle damage, or pain tends to be smaller than more traditional liposuction methods.  As a result, the patient is usually able to return to work within 48-hours.  One of the disadvantages of laser liposuction is that it may only be useful on a limited variety of body areas.  These body parts include the neck, face, and arms.  Some patients do not report a dramatic enough in their shapes or skin tightening following laser liposuction is used in other areas such as the abdomen, thighs, back areas, or the love handles.  This may be due to today's lasers not being quite aggressive enough in creating a significant change in the thickness of the fat deposits for most body types.  There is also some doubt among liposuction specialists as to exactly how effective laser liposuction is when it comes to skin tightening.  That being said, laser liposuction can be an effective procedure for a small portion of liposuction candidates.

Pricing of this procedure varies a great deal depending on how much fat you want removed, which body part is being treated, or which office you seek treatment in.  Patients who are interested in this procedure should seek treatment in a facility that specializes in liposculpture.  It is much more likely that their results will be better compared to other less experienced offices and the pricing often times is more affordable.  Pricing to selecting any method of liposuction, one should contact a liposuction specialist to find out what this procedure can do for their particular problem area.

Are You A Good Candidate For Tumescent Lipo?

Tumescent anesthesia liposuction can be of great benefit for most people who have fatty deposits in areas of their bodies that have not responded well to dieting and exercise. However, the best candidates for tumescent liposuction are active, healthy persons of average weight and good skin tone, and who have never had a lipo procedure to the same body part. Overweight individuals can also benefit from tumescent liposuction, especially if they are in the process of exercising and losing weight. The tumescent liposuction technique should be judiciously used in the morbidly obese. Ideal patients have committed to healthier habits and do not consider liposuction to be a substitute for exercising. Your liposuction specialist should listen to your goals of the treatment to better ascertain whether you have realistic expectations for what liposuction can and cannot do. It is best that liposuction patients have no significant medical problems. Age by itself is not a significant factor in tumescent liposuction.

Liposculpture under local anesthesia is the safest way to have liposuction. However, there are some people who may find it more uncomfortable than most other patients. I once performed a procedure on a patient who shared with me (after starting her procedure) that she always has difficulty when going to her dentist and requires multiple injections of the anesthetic to complete her dental procedures. Such people are commonly referred to as “lidocaine resistant” and may have a more comfortable experience if they were under general anesthesia (sleeping). However, general anesthesia is less safe and much more expensive. There were a handful of times when we stopped for a few minutes to add extra anesthetic during this person’s procedure but this is expected. She was still able to complete her procedure and even drive herself home afterwards. She scheduled another procedure in our office immediately afterwards.

Many members of our staff, including myself, have had a liposculpture procedure. Most patients anticipate that lipo will not be a completely pain-free event for every patient but neither is laser hair removal, waxing, Botox, dental procedures, etc. So like many other procedures, one should have some expectation of momentary discomfort but most patients are pleasantly surprised.

The numbing phase tends to be the only uncomfortable part but normally just last for 5-10 minutes. Anyone can view website videos of actual patients having the same procedure that this person had but they are clearly comfortable and experiencing no pain while having their problem areas reshaped. As for the incisions, we do not use stitches which allows for a couple of days of drainage (lessens swelling and bruising). Therefore, the incisions are still a little stretched immediately following the procedure. They normally heal about the size of a freckle and sometimes fade significantly but that takes some time. The incisions do shrink, bruising does fade, and the discomfort usually passes after 2-6 weeks. Coolsculpting vs Liposculpture

Coolsculpting or "Cryolipolysis" is a process by which cold paddles are placed on a patient's skin in an effort to destroy fat cells by "freezing" them. Patients are told that over time, their layer of fat will reduce in size and thus provide them with a more pleasing shape. Although the Coolsculpting procedure itself is usually performed in about an hour, patients are told that results may take 6-16 weeks to be appreciated. The results can be mixed from no visible changes to subtle changes. The cost can be significant ranging from $750 - $7,500 depending on the number of areas to be treated and how many sessions your medical office recommends. As with many other methods that are advertised as "non-invasive" quick fixes, most patients spend money on multiple sessions which can quickly increase costs.

In recent months, many people have contacted our office, Pacific Lipo in San Diego, California, to inquire about the benefits of Coolsculpting vs. liposculpture. After a brief discussion via consultation, nearly every client chooses liposculpture over coolsculpting. The most common reason for their selection is that most people understand that although "sculpting" is a key part of the word "Cool-sculpting", there is virtually little to no sculpting being performed by the artist. The artist I'm referring to is the medical provider who is controlling the instrument. Rod Davis, is a Nationally Certified Professional Physicians Assistant (PA). In his role with the San Diego, California-based clinic, he performs consultations; engages in various outpatient liposuction procedures; liaises between directors, physicians, and staff; and generally manages the Pacific Lipo surgical department as it's Director of Surgery. Board certified as a PA for over ten years, Rodney Davis Physician Assistant has been licensed to practice in both California and New York State, and has trained other medical providers on the art of liposculpture/liposuction.

Dr. Harrison Robbins, M.D, DMD, is Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery with more than 30 years of experience as a licensed physician in the state of California. Dr. Robbins, along with his highly trained liposculpture team, will help to minimize your risks while offering you the best possible care all under local anesthesia! Because of Dr. Robbins' training and expertise in liposuction technology, Pacific Lipo's procedures significantly reduce pain, swelling and bruising, while providing you with smoother results, tighter skin, and permanent contour improvements.

Dr. Robbins is an officer of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and served as Chair of its Examination Section for seven years. As a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, he was Chair of Education and Publication Committees. He was Founding Editor of Cosmetic Surgery Newsline and a member of theEditorial Advisory Board of the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery. He served as President of the American Society of Cosmetic Breast Surgery. He recently served as Editor of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI) section of its journal Monitor, and on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Academy of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). He currently serves as member of the Institutional Review Board for Scripps Health La Jolla and its San Diego Hospitals. He is also a member of the Research Committee of the Cosmetic Surgery Foundation. He received the 1st Annual Award for Best Scholarly Article published by the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery for his article, The First Facelift, and has published 4 additional articles on clinical trial research.

Dr. Robbins is currently President of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery elected to a 2 year term. He represents CACS on the 7-member Advisory Committee of the Medical Board of California for Physician Responsibility of Supervision of Affiliated Medical Care Providers. This Advisory Committee currently concentrates on Medical Spa regulation and regulation of Corporate Practice of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Robbins is Board-certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
